Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared voter registration a compulsory duty for all eligible citizens, stressing that participation in the ongoing nationwide exercise is critical to the state’s political strength.
The governor made the declaration on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voters Registration and Civic Awareness at Government House, Kano.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, Mr Yusuf tasked the committee with mobilising at least 10 million registered voters in Kano, including five million new registrants before the end of the exercise.
“You should know that your assignment is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure Kano registers an additional five million voters,” Mr Ibrahim said.
He explained that the committee would monitor polling units, ensure citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and liaise with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee card availability.
“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness. We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development,” he added.
Responding, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Information, Malam Ibrahim Waiya, pledged commitment, describing the assignment as a call to service.
