The Sokoto State Government has rolled out monthly stipends for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across the state, along with increased funding for Jumu’at Mosques.
This initiative was revealed in a statement on Saturday by Abubakar Bawa, Director General of Media and Publicity at the Sokoto Government House.’
He described the move as part of a broader strategy to promote Islamic education and encourage Qur’anic memorisation among children.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu formally announced the new measures during a ceremony celebrating the graduation of 111 Qur’an memorisers from the Sokoto chapter of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation.
According to Aliyu, the financial support aims to empower religious leaders in fulfilling their responsibilities more effectively, while fostering the continued growth of Islamic teachings throughout the state.
“We have also introduced monthly cash allocations to all our Jumu’at Mosques, ranging from N300,000 to N500,000 depending on their category.
“In addition, monthly allowances have been introduced for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across the state to support them in the discharge of their duties,” he said.
The governor emphasized that Islamic affairs continue to play a pivotal role in his administration’s ‘Nine-point Smart Agenda,’ positioned just behind security in terms of priority.
“Encouraging Qur’anic memorisation among our children will help raise a generation that upholds the good teachings of Islam in line with the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” Aliyu added.
He instructed the school management to secure land for the development of a permanent site, assuring that the state government would extend full support for the initiative.
During the event, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, commended Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi for founding the institution and applauded local scholars for their dedication to advancing Islamic values and fostering peaceful coexistence.
Representing former Sokoto Governor Aliyu Wamakko, Aminu Sufi encouraged parents to motivate their children to pursue Qur’anic memorisation.
In a similar show of support, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Lawal Liman, reaffirmed his commitment to the foundation and announced a donation of ₦22 million, along with food items for the graduands and the school.
Speaking through Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, the school’s proprietor, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, emphasized that the foundation’s expansion into other states aims to provide structured Qur’anic education and curb street begging among children.
As part of the celebration, each of the 111 graduands received ₦20,000 and clothing materials from the Sokoto State Government. The ceremony concluded with Qur’anic recitations and the presentation of prizes.
