The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said that a total of 171 associations have writing the Commission seeking to be registered as new political parties.

The commission made this known on Thursday after its weekly meeting in Abuja, adding that 19 more letters of intent were received.

INEC said that as at September 3, 2025, a total of 171 letters of intent have been received.

The commission said that the list has already been uploaded on its website.

The commission had earlier said that a shortlist of the pre-qualified associations is being finalised for the next stage of application for registration, insisting not applicants were able to meet the requirements for the registration of a new political party.

The apex electoral body appealed to the associations to exercise a little more patience as their applications are being treated accordingly.

“Worse, some associations have changed their interim leadership, following defections to other associations or even existing political parties, thereby delaying the process,” the Commission added.

The electoral umpire said that Nigerian would be informed of any step it takes during the process and other activities of the commission.
