Gunmen attacked Shagbe community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State on Saturday evening, killing some residents and abducting several others after storming the palace of the local monarch.
The incident reportedly left the community in shock, as the assailants were able to operate for hours without any security intervention.
A source said that repeated calls to security agencies during the attack went unanswered.
The attackers reportedly entered the community in large numbers, moved directly to the palace, and targeted the monarch and members of his household, though their main objective was not successful.
According to the source, “Bandits in large numbers stormed the community and forced their way into the palace of the Onishagbe of Shagbe, targeting the monarch or members of his household. However, their plans did not succeed”.
They killed some residents, abducted others, and operated for hours without any response from security forces despite repeated distress calls. The Kwara State government has since said it is on top of the situation.” the source added
The exact number of casualties and abducted individuals is yet to be confirmed.

This latest attack has intensified concerns over insecurity in Kwara State, particularly in rural areas where residents have frequently complained about delayed responses to violent crimes.
Notably, just weeks ago on August 24, two people were abducted in Babanla community, also in Ifelodun LGA, shortly after Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited to reassure residents of improved security.

Governor AbdulRazaq’s visit aimed to boost morale and address fears of recurring banditry and kidnappings.
However, the recent attack highlights the continued security challenges faced by communities in the region.
