A Lancashire councillor has resigned after posting a controversial social media comment celebrating the assassination of US conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Fiona Wild, who represented Lanehead ward as an independent on Burnley Council, stepped down following backlash over her remarks.
In the now-deleted post, she wrote that Kirk’s killing was “good riddance” and added that the “not… very nice man made himself a target and brought this on himself”.
Kirk, 31, was a prominent right-wing media figure in the United States and a close ally of former President Donald Trump.
He was shot and killed at a college in Utah on Wednesday.
Burnley Council confirmed Wild’s resignation, stating that it “does not condone the comments” and that an investigation into the complaints is underway, according to the BBC.
Burnley Council’s Conservative group leader, Councillor Jamie McGowan, had called for Wild to step down.
McGowan said, “It’s such a disgusting thing to say, which shows a nasty side I didn’t know she had.
“The comment has sparked outrage with many residents calling out her lack of humanity.”
Kirk gained prominence for hosting open-air political debates on university campuses across the United States.
In 2012, at just 18, he co-founded Turning Point USA, a student organisation dedicated to promoting conservative values at liberal-leaning colleges.
Through his social media platforms and his self-titled daily podcast, Kirk frequently shared clips of debates with students on topics such as transgender identity, climate change, religion, and family values.
However, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the suspect is still at large.
