In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, said Ogbu was kidnapped on September 7, 2025, at Onuimo by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, a former lawmaker who represented Okigwe State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, said Ogbu was kidnapped on September 7, 2025, at Onuimo by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The police noted that a viral video circulating online shows the former legislator being held hostage by the gunmen.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical units in synergy with other security agencies to track down the perpetrators and secure Ogbu’s release.
“The Imo State Police Command is aware of a viral video showing Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, former State Legislator who represented the Okigwe State Constituency, being held hostage by suspected IPOB/ESN terrorists,” the statement read.
The police appealed to residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist the operation.
Members of the public with useful intelligence have been urged to contact the Command via 0803 477 3600 or report to the nearest police station.
The statement assured that the Command will not relent until the perpetrators are brought to justice and the former lawmaker is reunited with his family.
Following the abduction, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, a politician who represented the Imo East Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, has pleaded with the Imo State Government and security agencies to ensure his release.
“Hon Ngozi Ogbu is a good man, peaceful, sincere, faultless and good governance campaigner. Seeing him die for committing no crime will be so devastating, worrisome and condemnable,” a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Ikenna Onuoha, said.
Anyanwu said that “in a saner clime, the safety and freedom of an innocent citizen is much important to the government than any other project”.
He called on “relevant authorities to join hands to save Hon Ogbu from captivity,” while expressing “optimism that his release will go a long way to rate how the government responds to the needs of its citizens”.
