Chef Hilda Baci has secured another Guinness World Record after cooking the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, weighing 8,780 kilogrammes, in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The record-breaking attempt was done in partnership with food brand Gino and was formally confirmed on Monday.
Guinness World Records announced on X that “New record: Largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.”
Baci, who first captured global attention with her cook-a-thon, once again showcased Nigerian cuisine on the international stage.
In a goodwill video on Friday, the record body said, “What’s cookin’? Best of luck to @hildabacicooks, who’s attempting a new record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice today.”
Thousands of food lovers, celebrities, and supporters thronged the venue, which turned into a carnival filled with music, dance, and celebration.
Speaking before the attempt, Baci explained that her specially built cooking pot had a 22,619-litre capacity and she planned to fill it to at least 80 per cent.
She noted that this would require about 5,278 kilogrammes of basmati rice, equivalent to 264 bags, but later adjusted her target to 250 bags as part of her strategy.
Addressing journalists during the cook, she revealed that she eventually used 200 bags because the crane and scale designed for the weighing could not exceed 20,000 kilogrammes, including the pot.
“If you notice, when we started, we weighed the pot, and we need to weigh every single thing that goes into the pot when we’re done,” she said.
“The goal was that by the time I was done making 5,000 kilogrammes, I was hoping to achieve about 17,000 to 18,000 kilogrammes. Right now, if I include the weight of the pot, that’s about 20,000.”
According to her, the 200 bags of rice amounted to 4,000 kilograms, which was enough to feed 20,000 people.
The event also had star appearances, including actress Funke Akindele, who mounted the stage to cheer Baci before joining her to stir the base of the rice.
The First Lady of Ogun State, Bamidele Abiodun, also attended to offer her support.
Other public figures present included Kaffy, Tomike Adeoye, Enioluwa, Veekee James, Tacha, Papaya, Alex Unusual, Spyro, and several others.
