Lagos Island residents on Thursday staged a peaceful protest following the brutal assault and death of Ramoni, allegedly at the hands of Adio Shamsideen, the Lagos Island National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chairman, and his aides.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 55-year-old Shamsideen Oladiti, popularly known as “Shameleon,” who is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, as investigations continue.
According to the police, Oladiti allegedly assaulted a dispatch rider on September 17, causing serious injuries that required oxygen support.
A separate complaint dates back to August 28, when he reportedly struck another man with a metallic ring during an altercation. That victim later died on September 17, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
Following news of the death, angry residents and sympathisers set two of Oladiti’s motorcycles ablaze at his office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, led a combined team of mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene to restore order.
The CP assured residents that Oladiti would face prosecution once investigations are concluded, and appealed for calm. Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, clarified that the dispatch rider injured on September 17 is still alive.
