The Peoples Democratic Party Northern Support Group has declared full support for former President Goodluck Jonathan to fly the party’s flag in the 2027 presidential election, describing him as “the only man capable of redeeming the PDP and restoring Nigeria’s unity.”
The group made the declaration in a communiqué issued at the end of its 8th meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, on Wednesday and Thursday.
In the communiqué jointly signed by Northern coordinator, Yusuf Abubakar and the North-West Zonal Secretary, Adamu Narayi, the group called for an “aggressive and coordinated media campaign”—particularly in the North—to mobilise support for Jonathan and promote the PDP’s renewed agenda.
The coalition, which comprises PDP loyalists and support groups from across the 19 northern states, also reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, praising his reconciliation efforts aimed at repositioning the party.
The group’s northern coordinator, Abubakar, said, “We remain optimistic that the PDP is not beyond redemption. With genuine commitment and collective sacrifice, our great party will reclaim power at the national level and in states currently under the APC.”
The group insisted that there was “no going back on Jonathan in 2027,” describing the former president as a tested leader and symbol of peace.
“Dr Jonathan has never abandoned the PDP. He peacefully handed over power in 2015 and continues to stand for unity, progress, and stability. He is the man to restore hope,” Abubakar declared.
They dismissed concerns over his eligibility to contest again, saying the issue had long been settled and “cannot be used by the opposition to distract the PDP.”
However, the group expressed worry over “the negative conduct of some party leaders and elders” allegedly sabotaging ongoing reconciliation efforts.
“Certain elements within the National Working Committee (NWC), driven by selfish interests, are working to derail the party’s progress,” the communiqué alleged.
It accused some of “collaborating with the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu while pretending to build the PDP..
While commending Damagum’s reconciliatory steps, the group urged him to take disciplinary action against those involved in anti-party activities or double loyalty.
The group concluded by reaffirming that the party still enjoys strong grassroots support across the North, urging members to close ranks and rebuild the PDP’s strength ahead of 2027.
“Our loyalty is to the PDP, not to individuals. Together, we will restore the party’s lost glory,” the group declared.
The media reports that Jonathan’s presumed interest in vying for the 2027 presidential ticket under the PDP has triggered sharp debates within party ranks.
Earlier media reports indicate the PDP is split between those backing Jonathan and those advocating for alternatives from other regions.
