Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant on Social Media to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is facing public backlash after a series of old posts resurfaced showing him openly advocating military takeovers as a solution to Nigeria’s governance problems.
The controversial posts, made years before his appointment into the Tinubu administration, have sparked outrage as many Nigerians question his commitment to democratic values.
One of the most cited tweets, attributed to his verified account @DOlusegun, read:
“Hate me if you want. A coup is the only thing that can restore normalcy to this nation. Yeah! I said it!!” — posted on November 2, 2012.
Another tweet dated June 19, 2012, expressed similar sentiments: “A military coup is looking good right about now!”
Olusegun also commented on the 2017 military takeover in Zimbabwe, drawing comparisons to Nigeria’s political climate at the time.
He wrote, “Coup more peaceful than any election that holds in Rivers State.”
These resurfaced statements have stirred widespread debate online, with critics describing them as alarming and inconsistent with his current position in a democratically elected government.
The resurfaced tweets arose amid reports of an alleged coup plot against Bola Tinubu’s administration. Recent publications claimed that about sixteen senior Army officers were arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for allegedly planning to overthrow the government.
According to Reports, the officers, ranging from Captains to a Brigadier General, were accused of holding secret meetings to stage the coup around Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration.
