The Nigerian Army on Thursday held a formal handing and taking over ceremony between the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shuiabu, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Oluyede proceeded to the Defence Headquarters, where he takes over from the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa.
The events marked a transition of leadership in the military, following recent changes approved by President Bola Tinubu.
Senior officers, directors, and other top military personnel witnessed the brief ceremony.
“Handing and taking over between the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede and the incoming Chief of Army Staff, Maj Gen Waidi Shaibu, in progress at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja,” a report said.
The Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Navy in their headquarters are holding same handing over ceremonies.
President Tinubu had earlier appointed Maj Gen Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff after the retirement of Lt Gen Oluyede.
The Senate later confirmed the appointment in accordance with constitutional provisions.
During the event, Lt Gen Oluyede officially handed over the documents and instruments of authority to Maj Gen Shuiabu, signifying the completion of the leadership change.
Lt Gen Oluyede, who had served as Chief of Army Staff since 2023, formally bowed out of service after the ceremony.
Maj Gen Shuiabu is expected to take over full command responsibilities immediately.
