Naval Officer Lieutenant Ahmad M. Yerima was stopped by policemen in Abuja for allegedly driving a vehicle with a covered number plate. The event occurred amidst heightened security measures in the Federal Capital Territory, where the police have intensified stop-and-search operations to curb crimes, particularly emphasizing the importance of visible number plates as part of these efforts.
This confrontation follows a high-profile altercation involving Yerima and the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike over a land dispute, which had already placed the officer in the public eye. Legal experts had criticized Yerima’s actions in that incident for potentially breaching civil-military relations protocols, adding a layer of complexity to the current situation.

Meanwhile,the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has firmly denied reports alleging an assassination attempt on Nigerian Navy officer Lt. A.M. Yerima, describing the claims circulating on social media as baseless and unverified.
In a statement issued on Sunday night, the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the police had no record of any such attack within the territory.
She stressed that the narrative being promoted online does not correspond with any incident reported to law enforcement authorities.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima.
“The command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.
“The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic,” the statement read.
Adeh urged residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious activity to the nearest police division rather than rely on unverified reports.
The police rebuttal follows widespread online claims that Lt. Yerima—who recently had a heated confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—had narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja.
According to earlier reports, quoting military sources, Vanguard stated that the officer was trailed on Sunday evening around 6:30pm by men dressed in black and riding in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates.
The vehicles allegedly followed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Kubwa Expressway to Gado Nasco Way, prompting what sources described as a “strategic maneuver” that helped him evade “potential assassins”.
Sources further noted that the matter had been escalated to the relevant authorities and was receiving “the seriousness it deserves,” though some details were being withheld to avoid jeopardising ongoing security processes.
The incident comes days after a viral confrontation between Yerima and Minister Wike at a property site in Gaduwa District, Gudu, Abuja, reportedly occupied by the military.
A video circulating online showed Wike accusing the officer of obstructing his directive concerning the land.
