Fresh facts has emerged concerning the demise of the Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial zone, Chief Okey Ezea.
The media had earlier reported that Ezea passed away on Tuesday while receiving medical treatment in the United Kingdom.
However, fresh facts revealed that Ezea, who was diabetic had one of his legs amputated.
Family sources claimed he died in Lagos from complications arising from the operation.
According to the source, Ezea had one of his legs amputated as doctors battled to save his life.
“Ideke had diabetes and had returned from the UK. He was being treated in a hospital in Lagos where he had had one of his legs amputated due to complications from the ailment.
“The doctors were doing skin graft to cover the amputated leg when he gave up the ghost,” the source said.
Members of the Nigerian Senate have started penning emotional tribute to the deceased Senator.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, and Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, described Ezea’s death as heartbreaking.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the late lawmaker in a statement posted on her Facebook page, as a good, wise, and gentle man whose prayers supported her through her darkest moments.
She wrote, “Rest in peace, Distinguished Senator Okey Ezea. You were a good man! Wise and gentle.
“Your prayers kept me going through my darkest moments, and I will miss you in chambers.
“Enugu North Senatorial District, Kogi Central honors your Senator and mourns with you.”
Born on 11 August 1963 to the family of Late Chief James Ezea of Itchi, Igbo-Eze South, and Mrs Theresa Ezea of Nsukka Urban, Ezea had a long career in politics and public service.
He co-founded the All Progressives Congress in Enugu in 2013 and became the party’s gubernatorial candidate in 2015.
In 2018, he was appointed chairman of the governing board of the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo, a position he held until 2022, when he resigned to join the Labour Party. He won the party’s senatorial ticket that year and was elected senator for Enugu North on 25 February 2023.
