A former vice chairman of Malumfashi Local Government Area in Katsina State, Nasiru Abdullahi Dayi, who was abducted 103 days ago in Dayi village, has regained freedom.
The 62-year-old was released after family members reportedly paid an undisclosed amount of money as ransom to his captors.
When contacted, the victim said he would speak extensively with our reporter in Katsina in the coming days. He, however, expressed profound gratitude to all those who prayed for him and supported efforts to secure his release.
“I appreciate everyone who contributed, including the media, for your unflinching support while I was in captivity. I promise to grant you an exclusive interview,” he said.
Since his release on Tuesday, Nasiru Dayi has been receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Katsina. Eyewitnesses described him as weak and exhausted, as friends, relatives and well-wishers continue to troop in to sympathise with him.
Family members who spoke to Weekend Trust said they were traumatised throughout the period of his abduction, enduring sleepless nights. They urged government authorities to intensify efforts to protect rural communities from persistent bandit attacks.
A close friend of the victim, Hassan Muhammad Tukur, expressed joy over Dayi’s release, saying, “We are extremely happy that he is now breathing the fresh air of freedom 103 days after his abduction. We pray to Allah to prevent a recurrence of this ugly incident,” he said.
Attempts to get confirmation from the Katsina State police command were unsuccessful as the command’s spokesperson, DSP Sadik Aliyu, who earlier promised to verify the development, was yet to respond at the time of filing this report.
