Eyo Festival Turns Violent in Lagos as Residents Clash with Masquerades, Hoodlums Brandish Guns, Unleash Mayhem

Outrage has erupted across social media platforms following the circulation of a viral video showing Eyo masquerades assaulting a man during the ongoing 2025 Eyo Festival in Lagos. 

The video, which surfaced on Saturday, shows about four men clad in the traditional white Eyo regalia with red hats repeatedly striking a man with their staves. 

As the victim struggled to shield himself from the blows, other masked men were seen rushing toward the scene, apparently to join the assault, while onlookers watched without intervention.

In another video sighted by SaharaReporters on Saturday, a separate confrontation was captured as residents were seen throwing chairs and other objects at a group of Eyo masquerades during a procession. 

The clash reportedly occurred when some of the masquerades approached a gate where residents had gathered.

The incidents reportedly occurred around the Onikan axis on Lagos Island, a key route for the festival procession. According to reports, some masquerades allegedly assaulted passersby who were not participating, including a young man beaten with a staff near the Onikan Roundabout.
