The Federal Ministry of Steel Development has suspended 58 staff members of the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), Jos, following protests and alleged disruptions of official activities at the agency.
SaharaReporters learnt that the development has caused anger and disquiet in the agency as workers and inside sources accused the management of corruption, maladministration, and high-handedness.
Also it was gathered that the Minister, Shuaibu Audu, established a disciplinary and investigative committee to examine the situation and make recommendations to restore normal operations.
The said committee would review the staff conduct and determine appropriate measures to ensure compliance with public service rules.
As part of the intimidation plot, the workers revealed that the Ministry stated that the suspended staff may be required to provide information or clarification during the investigation.
“Please note that in the course of further investigation into the matter, they may be called upon for interrogation or clarification and would be required to cooperate fully by providing any useful information or documentation that will assist the Committee discharge her assignment.”
Staff were also instructed to provide contact details to facilitate communication. “They should therefore indicate their contact addresses and telephone numbers to enable the Committee to reach out to them if and when the need arises.”
Among those suspended are senior officials and technical personnel, including Michael Philip Mahelia, Senior Mechanical Engineer; Jamil Baba, Director of Refractory; Henry Muanleng, Principal Metallurgist; Ucheji Nwancho, Assistant Director in Human Resource Management (Records); and Emma Fada, Chief Confidential Officer (Admin).
The NMDC management reminded the staff that “They are required to leave the Agency’s premises immediately and not return until further notice,” warning that failure to comply could result in further action as the investigation continues.
