In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump claimed that before his presidency, most NATO members were failing to meet their financial obligations, leaving the United States to shoulder the burden.
United States President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy after boasting that he single-handedly forced NATO countries to increase their defence spending and prevented Russia from taking over Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump claimed that before his presidency, most NATO members were failing to meet their financial obligations, leaving the United States to shoulder the burden.
“Remember, for all of those big NATO fans, they were at 2% GDP, and most weren’t paying their bills, UNTIL I CAME ALONG,” The USA was, foolishly, paying for them!”
Trump stated that he pushed NATO allies to raise defence spending to as high as 5 percent of their Gross Domestic Product, insisting that member states now pay, immediately.
“I, respectfully, got them to 5% GDP, AND THEY PAY, immediately. Everyone said that couldn’t be done, but it could, because, beyond all else, they are all my friends” he added.
The president also claimed that his involvement was decisive in preventing a total Russian takeover of Ukraine.
“Without my involvement, Russia would have ALL OF UKRAINE right now” Trump said, without offering details to support the claim.
Trump further alleged that he single-handedly ended eight wars during his time in office and expressed bitterness that Norway, a NATO member, did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Remember, also, I single-handedly ENDED 8 WARS, and Norway, a NATO Member, foolishly chose not to give me the Noble Peace Prize. But that doesn’t matter!” he said.
According to Trump, what truly matters is that he saved millions of lives, while warning that NATO would be powerless without American leadership.
“What does matter is that I saved Millions of Lives. RUSSIA AND CHINA HAVE ZERO FEAR OF NATO WITHOUT THE UNITED STATES, AND I DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM,” he stated.
Trump also credited himself with rebuilding the U.S. military during his first term and claimed he continues to do so, arguing that America’s strength under his leadership is the only force respected by Moscow and Beijing.
“EVERYONE IS LUCKY THAT I REBUILT OUR MILITARY IN MY FIRST TERM, AND CONTINUE TO DO SO. We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us. The only Nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the DJT REBUILT U.S.A. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” he said.
Trump added that, despite his doubts about NATO’s loyalty, the United States, under his leadership, would always stand by the alliance, even if its allies would not be there for the U.S.
