The trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the 46-year-old driver involved in the accident that claimed the lives of Nigerian-born boxing star Anthony Joshua’s close friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, has been adjourned to February 25, 2026.
The case, initially scheduled for hearing at the Sagamu Magistrate Court, was postponed after prosecuting counsel Richard Nigiwe informed the court that “they have four witnesses, but only three were in attendance.”
Mr Nigiwe further explained that the adjournment was necessary to allow the prosecution “to duplicate the case file and present it to the Attorney General of the State through the Department of Public Prosecution for advice.”
The defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, objected to the delay, arguing that the prosecution “had enough time to do so prior to this date.”
Despite the objection, the magistrate ruled that “in the interest of justice, the case should be adjourned to 25th February, 2026,” and directed the prosecuting counsel to duplicate the file and submit it to the Attorney General’s office for review.
Following the proceedings, the defence counsel stated that he agreed with the decision, while Mr Nigiwe declined to comment on the adjournment.
The case stems from a tragic accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to reports, the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of Ayodele and Ghami.
Both Anthony Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Kayode faces four charges, including dangerous and negligent driving, as well as driving without a valid licence.
He was initially remanded in custody on January 2, 2026, and was later granted bail of N5 million with two sureties.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that he remained remanded pending fulfilment of his bail conditions, while the case had been previously adjourned to January 20 for trial before the current postponement.
The tragic incident has continued to attract attention, given the prominence of the victims and the fact that the accident occurred on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
The legal proceedings are expected to resume in February, with the prosecution required to complete the duplication of the case file and secure guidance from the Attorney General’s office.
The court’s decision underscores the importance of ensuring that all procedural requirements are fully met before the trial proceeds, aiming to safeguard the interests of justice while addressing the serious charges against Kayode.
