A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of the OBIdient Movement, Dickson Iroegbu, has said that a joint presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections would pose a serious threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Iroegbu stated this on Friday while speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.
According to him, an alliance between the former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, would significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape and cause serious concern within the Presidential Villa.
He said Kwankwaso, having reflected on past political decisions, may now be better positioned to form a strategic alliance with Obi ahead of the next general election.
“If Kwankwaso has realised from experience that he can form an alliance with Peter Obi, then the two of them can make a major statement in 2027,” Iroegbu said.
He recalled that ahead of the 2023 general elections, Kwankwaso was reportedly offered the position of vice-presidential candidate by Obi under the Labour Party but declined the proposal.
According to reports, the former Kano State governor later expressed regret over the decision, admitting that he would have accepted the offer if given another opportunity.
Kwankwaso has also been quoted as saying that he would be willing to join any political party ahead of 2027, provided he is given the opportunity to run as either a presidential or vice-presidential candidate.
Iroegbu stressed that a combined Obi–Kwankwaso ticket would galvanise massive support across different regions of the country.
“The candidacy of Peter Obi as president and Kwankwaso as vice president will definitely make the Presidential Villa lose sleep,” he added.
