A Nigerian student pursuing a Master of Business Administration at S.C. Johnson College of Business, Oreoluwa Odetunde, has died in the United States.
Odetunde, a first-year MBA student at Cornell University, was found dead in her off-campus residence on Thursday, according to a statement by the institution.
The late student, an international scholar from Nigeria, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Lagos in 2017 before proceeding to the U.S. for her postgraduate studies, according to the Cornell Daily Sun.
At Cornell, she was actively involved in campus life and professional development groups, including the Johnson African Business Society, the Black Graduate Business Association and the Old Ezra Finance Club. She was also recognised as a Forté Fellow and Sage Scholar.
Before her MBA programme, Odetunde gained experience in research and strategy analysis roles at financial institutions such as Anchoria Asset Management and Greenwich Merchant Bank.
In a statement posted on LinkedIn, the Cornell Johnson Graduate School expressed grief over her passing.
“We are devastated for Oreoluwa’s family, friends, classmates and instructors and extend our deepest condolences in this difficult time,” read a LinkedIn post from the Cornell Johnson Graduate School,” the statement reads.
The university announced that support meetings were organised for members of the S.C. Johnson College community, with counselling and psychological services made available to students and staff.
