A Nigerian soldier identified as Abdulwahab Lawal has reportedly been killed in an ambush by suspected bandits while travelling to his duty post in Zamfara State.
Lawal’s family members said he was on his way to resume duty after leaving Malumfashi in Katsina State when gunmen attacked commuters along the route on Tuesday evening.
This was also according to an X (formerly Twitter) user, @DanKatsina50.
He was reportedly shot during the assault and died at the scene.
Sources said the assailants were believed to be armed bandits who operate across parts of the North-West, frequently targeting highways, rural communities and security personnel.
The region has witnessed years of sustained violence linked to criminal gangs involved in kidnappings, cattle rustling and deadly raids.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident or providing further details about the circumstances surrounding the ambush, including the exact location of the attack.
However, family members reportedly confirmed Lawal’s death and said funeral prayers would be conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.
The killing marks another violent episode in Nigeria’s troubled North-West, where both civilians and security operatives continue to face persistent attacks despite ongoing military operations aimed at curbing banditry.
The media contacted the Army spokesperson, Colonel Onyinye Anele, for confirmation and more details on the incident. However, at the time of filing this report, she has not responded to the WhatsApp message sent to her.
