A jury has found former footballer Richard Appiah guilty of murder in a chilling case that has gripped Abesim in Ghana’s Bono Region since 2021.
He was hereafter sentenced to life imprisonment.
The long-running trial of Appiah came to a close on Tuesday with a unanimous verdict, bringing an end to proceedings that began following the shocking discovery of two children’s bodies at his residence in Abesim.
According to JoyOnline, a seven-member jury found Appiah guilty on two counts of murder.
The victims, aged 12 and 15, were killed in 2021 in a case that stunned the local community and drew national attention.
Appiah, who was 28 at the time of the crime, had been on trial since 2022 before Justice Ruby Aryeetey.
The case first emerged in August 2021 when police in Abesim, near Sunyani, arrested Appiah after uncovering the bodies of two boys in his home.
Some remains were reportedly found in a refrigerator, sparking widespread horror and condemnation.
According to police reports, the victims were identified as Louis Agyemang (12), believed to be Appiah’s stepbrother, and Stephen Sarpong (15), the son of a family friend.
At the time of his arrest, media reports variously described Appiah as a footballer, sports commentator, and architect, though the Ghana Institute of Architects later confirmed he was not a registered architect.
During his detention, Appiah reportedly demanded specific foods and exhibited unusual behaviors, prompting authorities to request a psychiatric evaluation as part of their investigation.
