The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed the blackout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its environs following vandalism.
It lamented the damage to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Tower along the 330KV Gwagwalada-Katampe transmission line.
SaharaReporters on Wednesday reported that suspected electricity vandals intensified their assault on the nation’s capital city, Abuja following the reported bombing of the TCN Tower 70, along the 330KV Gwagwalada -Katampe transmission line in the Federal Capital Territory.
The incident has reduced bulk power supply flexibility and the volume of power into Abuja by 250MW, according to TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah.
Ndidi said the incident occurred at about 11.32 pm on February 26, which forced the company to deploy a patrol team after an attempt at reclosure of a power trip at the Gwagwalada Substation failed.
She said the tower was presently standing precariously with the support of conductors.
The AEDC in a notice to its customers in the capital city on Thursday said that the vandalism had significantly disrupted the flow of bulk power supply into Abuja, resulting in a reduction of 250MW (megawatts) and subsequently causing power outages in many areas.
The electricity distribution company notice read, “We regret to inform all our customers in Abuja and environs that there has been an unfortunate incident impacting the power supply in various parts of Abuja.
“On the 26th of February, at approximately 11:32 pm, a Transmission Company Tower along the 330kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission line was severely vandalized.
“This act of vandalism has significantly disrupted the flow of bulk power supply into Abuja, resulting in a reduction of 250MW (megawatts) and subsequently causing power outages in many areas.
“We understand the inconvenience this has caused, and we assure you that all relevant stakeholders are working tirelessly to restore power supply as soon as possible.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience and understanding during this challenging time.
“Rest assured, we are committed to resolving this issue swiftly and restoring normalcy to your power supply.”
