The farmers, who expressed their grievances through the Kaura Youth Coalition (KYC), said that the activities of the suspected herders have thrown them into huge losses amounting to billions of naira.
Farmers in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State have lamented constant and undeterred attacks and destruction of their farmlands by suspected herdsmen.
The farmers, who expressed their grievances through the Kaura Youth Coalition (KYC), said that the activities of the suspected herders have thrown them into huge losses amounting to billions of naira.
President of the Kaura Youth Coalition, Bawa Gwazeyiet Emmanuel, in a statement titled “Farmers in Misery,” highlighted the ongoing damage to crops caused by what he described as “audacious and brazen herdsmen” who commit these acts without facing repercussions.
Emmanuel, who expressed frustration the herders have subjected the farmers to said, “All our attempts to engage, appeal, and convince the herdsmen to graze responsibly and avoid encroaching on farmland have been ignored.”
He added, “The herders watch as their cattle destroy entire farms before moving on to the next one. This has been an ongoing struggle for farmers, particularly in Yadi and surrounding areas.”
Emmanuel also mentioned that he possesses photographic evidence of numerous farms ruined by cattle, with no action taken to remedy the situation or alleviate the farmers’ suffering.
He recounted a distressing encounter saying, “Today, I met a woman who was inconsolable. Her husband is nearly blind and struggles to work the farm. When she went to check today, she found the entire farm devastated.”
Emmanuel noted that despite reporting the issue to elected representatives and security agencies, no effective measures have been implemented, adding that the herders continue to destroy crops without fear of consequences.
He expressed concern that the destruction of crops, particularly when they are nearly ripe, could lead to severe unrest and violence.
Emmanuel urged that stakeholders in Kaduna State must address this issue with the urgency it demands to prevent a potential crisis.
