The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was a necessary step to restore stability amid the state’s deepening political crisis.
Matawalle emphasised that the measure is essential to address the ongoing turmoil, which he said has significantly hampered governance and the well-being of Rivers State residents.
He urged all political stakeholders to respect the President’s directive and work towards a peaceful resolution.
“In light of the current situation, the Nigerian military is on high alert to safeguard government infrastructure and ensure the security of the citizens,” a statement from the Minister’s office read.
He further warned that “Any attempts to attack government facilities or disrupt public order will be met with a resolute response from security forces.”
The state of emergency follows months of escalating political tension in Rivers State. One of the most controversial incidents fuelling the crisis was the demolition of the state’s House of Assembly complex, allegedly ordered by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The destruction of the legislative building has effectively left the state without a functioning Assembly for over 14 months, deepening the political impasse.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that the absence of a legislature in Rivers State is unconstitutional and called for immediate steps to restore democratic governance.
Matawalle echoed this sentiment, stressing the urgency of re-establishing functional governance structures.
The Minister also raised concerns about recent reports of vandalism and threats from militant groups, highlighting the importance of a united effort to restore peace and security.
He assured that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting citizens and vital infrastructure in the state.
Furthermore, Matawalle reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces to upholding national security and ensuring Rivers State returns to stability and democratic governance.
He urged all stakeholders to seize this opportunity to foster renewed governance and cooperation, expressing optimism that the state of emergency would pave the way for a peaceful and democratic future for Rivers State and its residents.
