Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and security, stressing that political rallies will not be allowed to disrupt the state’s stability.
Speaking at the 158th State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Diri stated that while his government respects constitutional rights, it would be unwise to hold rallies amid ongoing efforts to restore calm in neighboring Rivers State.
Diri was reacting to plans by some supporters of FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, to hold a rally in Bayelsa.
The governor noted that due to recent state of emergency in Rivers, any unrest in the state inevitably impacts Bayelsa.
“A state of emergency has been imposed in Rivers State. President Bola Tinubu has the power to do so. All we can do from our end is to see how we can bring lasting peace to Rivers State,” Diri said.
“Bayelsa and Rivers are sister states, and whatever happens there has some degree of effect on our state. And then some persons say they want to hold a mega rally here. We are not yet in a political season. As the chief security officer of the state, I have a duty to ensure that no one disrupts the peace and security of this state.”
Diri stressed that due process must be followed for any public gathering, citing the example of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who formally informed the state government of her scheduled visit on Thursday.Nigerian political art prints
The governor urged Bayelsans to give the First Lady a warm reception, emphasizing the need for order and stability.
