A wave of terror has engulfed Enugu State as suspected Fulani terrorists launched a series of brutal attacks in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, leaving at least 25 people dead and dozens injured.
According to SaharaReporters, the violence has forced numerous families to flee their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring states.
Local vigilante groups have raised alarms over the escalating insecurity, criticizing the delayed response from security agencies.
Godwin Ezugwu, a member of the vigilante, expressed frustration, noting that the newly appointed Enugu Police Commissioner, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, had recently denied any signs of insecurity in the region.
The attacks have included the killing of vigilante member Chijioke Anioke at Ekenwaozege junction, the murder of Nwa Black in Opanda, Adani, and the kidnapping of Entraco driver Patty Ozor, during which a passenger was fatally shot.
Community leaders have expressed disappointment over the inaction of Uzo-Uwani LGA Chairman Chijioke Ezugwu, a former vigilante leader, and have called on Governor Peter Mbah to intervene.​
In a particularly harrowing incident on April 8, four farmers, including women, were killed in their fields in the Adani community.
Residents report that the road from Adani to Ogurugu has become perilous, with frequent kidnappings attributed to the same group of assailants.
The persistent attacks, which began in 2002 and intensified in 2021, have continued unabated under the current administration, leading to the displacement of residents from 44 farm settlements in Eha-Amufu Isi-Uzo LGA.
