
A fire explosion has destroyed a filling station located opposite the Nigerian Air Force Base in Rumuomasi, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving several properties damaged.
Eyewitnesses said the inferno originated from the Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, commonly referred to as the cooking gas section of the station.
Some vehicles in the vicinity were affected by the blaze.
The fire also spread to nearby properties, including a church and a bar.
Viral videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, showing thick plumes of smoke rising into the air as panicked onlookers screamed and fled the area.
Emergency responders from the fire service quickly arrived at the scene and managed to contain the blaze, preventing further escalation and destruction.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the explosion or confirm any casualties.
At the time of filing this report, Grace Iringe-Koko, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Rivers State Command, had not responded to the media’ calls for confirmation of the incident.
