The flood, which occurred in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, has left a trail of destruction, with many families displaced and livelihoods lost.
Former Nigerian Military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has described the devastating Mokwa flood that claimed over 200 lives as “ordained by God” and “beyond our powers”.
The flood, which occurred in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, has left a trail of destruction, with many families displaced and livelihoods lost.
Babangida expressed his condolences to the people of Mokwa and the entire Niger State government over the tragedy.
He urged residents to continue praying for the souls of the deceased and for peace and stability in the state.
The former president made this known when he received a Sallah homage from a delegation of the Niger State government led by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba at his residence in Minna.
Babangida commended the administration of Governor Umaru Bago for its developmental efforts and called for the sustenance of such initiatives.
IBB said, “What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate but it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased.”
Replying the deputy governor noted, “We are aware that the General is disturbed by the recent incident in Mokwa and all we need from all and sundry is prayers and we will also appreciate your fatherly role at all times especially at this trying period.
“The people of Niger State and Nigeria in general are appreciative of your diligent service to the country and we assure you that the State Government will not fail you as you remain a pillar of hope for the Nation.”
The Mokwa flood has been described as one of the most devastating in recent times, with the death toll estimated at almost 200.
Many families were swept away by the floodwaters, with some survivors recounting harrowing tales of loss and survival. Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, leaving many residents with significant economic and emotional losses.
One survivor, Rabi Musa, lost her husband and three children to the flood. She recounted how her husband attempted to rescue their children but was swept away by the strong currents.
Another survivor, Malam Balarabe Isah, lost his three wives and seven children, describing the incident as traumatic and beyond comprehension.
The flood has had significant economic and health implications for the affected communities. Many businesses were destroyed, and commercial activities have come to a standstill.
The Mokwa General Hospital is filled with patients, and there are concerns about the potential outbreak of waterborne diseases due to the lack of access to clean water and electricity.
The state government has promised to investigate the root cause of the incident to prevent future occurrences.
As the affected communities begin the long journey of recovery, many are calling for urgent support and relief efforts to alleviate their suffering.
