The Nigerian Army has declared a three-day mourning period from June 25 to June 27, 2025, to honour the 17 gallant soldiers who lost their lives during a fierce encounter with armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
The declaration comes a day after the military revealed that no fewer than 300 heavily armed terrorists engaged its troops in a coordinated attack that also left 10 soldiers injured.
In a release on Thursday, the army said, “It is with profound respect that the Nigerian Army declares a three-day mourning period, from June 25th to June 27th, 2025, to honor the bravery and sacrifice of 17 courageous soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty at Kwana Dutse Local Government Area, Niger State.
As a mark of solemn tribute, all Nigerian Army formations and units have been directed to fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast.
During this period, we pay our deepest respects to these fallen heroes and extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones. Their unwavering dedication, valor, and sacrifice in defense of our nation will forever be remembered and cherished.”
The soldiers were part of a joint operation with the Nigerian Air Force when they were ambushed on Tuesday, June 24, during a night-time mission in the forest area.
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported that the incident occurred near Bangi, where around 20 soldiers were believed to have been killed in an ambush by the attackers.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, the operation was launched based on credible intelligence indicating that terrorists were planning to move towards Kwatankoro Forest — either to launch attacks on nearby communities or flee from intensified military operations in Zamfara State.
“The operation, which was based on credible intelligence, led to troops engaging about 300 armed bandits in Kwanar Dutse Forest.
The criminals had attempted a night-time transit towards Kwatankoro Forest, where they were reportedly planning coordinated attacks on surrounding communities or looking for a safe haven to evade the pressure from our operations in Zamfara State.
However, their movement and actions were effectively disrupted by troops who engaged them in a fierce firefight that lasted over three hours.”
Despite the ambush, the Nigerian Army said it inflicted significant damage on the enemy, as multiple blood trails were found along the terrorists’ escape routes, suggesting heavy casualties.
The Nigerian Air Force also carried out precision airstrikes on the terrorists’ withdrawal routes to halt their retreat and destroy their positions.
