The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disowned a list of purported state chairmen circulating on social media, warning the public against falling victim to fraudulent schemes being peddled in its name.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary and spokesperson for the coalition of opposition political parties, the ADC categorically denied knowledge of any such appointments, describing the list as entirely fictitious.
A post on a verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, released a list of over 30 names of chairpersons appointed across the federation and the FCT.
“The national secretariat of the ADC has released names of the party’s state chairmen in all the 36 states and federal capital territory, Abuja,” part of a statement posted alongside the names and their states.
The statement which had no signatory to indicate who signed it added, “Members of the public are hereby notified that the National Secretariat of ADC has released the names of the Party’s State chapter chairmen and the Federal Capital Territory, as follows: Hanatu Garaba — Plateau; Musa S. Shuaib —Nasarawa; Adekolu O. Moses — Ekiti; Patrick Obianyo — Anambra, and Hon. Haruna Hassan —Bauchi.
“Others are Otunba Pat. Olufemi — Ogun; Celestine Orbunda— Benue; Mohammed Bolori — Borno; Comrade John Ogar —Cross River; Austine Okotie — Delta; Jennifer Adibie N — Ebonyi; Kennedy Odion — Edo; Iyke Nwoka — Abia; Stella Chukwula— Enugu; Mallam Danladi Yau — Gombe; Duke Gabriel Dick — Akwa Ibom; Alh. Sanni Mohammed — Jigawa; Ahmed Tijani M — Kaduna, and Ungogo Musa — Kano.
“Also in the list are Alh. Usman Musa — Katsina; Hajia Hawa Mohammed — Kebbi; John Adeli Udale — Kogi; Adebayo Akadi — Kwara; George Ashiru — Lagos; Chief Mrs Ganiyu Sidirika — Ondo; Auta Mohammed — Niger; Yohanna Shehu K — Adamawa; Chief Emmanuel Amushe — Imo; Charles Idowu — Osun; Alh. Yinka Adona — Oyo; Yusuf Tijani — FCT; Ode Lawrence E— Rivers; Hon. Umar Farouk — Sokoto; Adamu Hassan — Taraba; Alh. Kalli Umar — Yobe, and Alh. Kabiru Garba — Zamfara.
“Akwa Ibom State chapter hereby notifies all persons who obtained membership cards last week without the stamp and imprimatur of the state chairman to please present them at the State Secretariat of the Party at No. 84 Udotung Ubo Street, Uyo, for stamping and signature of the State chairman, and entry of their names in the Party’s membership register.”
However, Abdullahi in his statement distanced the party from the list, saying, “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) wishes to make it known to the public that the party is not aware of any appointment of State Chairmen as being circulated on the social media space.”
Abdullahi urged members of the public to beware of what he described as fake news being circulated in the name of the party online.
“The ADC admonishes Nigerians to verify every of its information via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of its National Publicity Secretary, @BolajiADC,” he stated.
“Any information that does not emanate from the appropriate communication channels of the party and verified on the X (formerly Twitter) page of the National Publicity Secretary should be disregarded.”
The party also raised alarm over the emergence of fraudulent online platforms claiming to facilitate registration for new members of the party.
According to Abdullahi, the platforms are being used by fraudsters to swindle unsuspecting Nigerians of their hard-earned money under the guise of registering them to the party.
“The party also dismissed and condemned in strong terms, the information that some persons have set-up fictitious online platforms to swindle unsuspecting Nigerians of their hard-earned money under the guise of registering them to the party,” he stated.
“The ADC cautions Nigerians to be wary of such fraudulent acts and consult widely within the appropriate channels which will be made available to the general public on the activities of the ADC and the coalition of opposition political parties.”
The caution comes amid a surge in online political scams and misinformation in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
The ADC, along with several other opposition parties, has recently intensified its activities under a new opposition coalition formed to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress’ growing influence.
