A member of the House of Representatives, Jamilu Muhammad, representing Kankara/Faskari/Sabua Federal Constituency of Katsina State, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Jamilu cited internal disunity, anti-party activities, and the party’s failure to provide effective opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as his reasons for resignation from the party.
In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Faskari ward in Faskari Local Government Area, Jamilu declared that his decision was the result of deep reflection and wide consultation.
The lawmaker stated that the PDP has deviated from the ideals necessary to address Nigeria’s current challenges.
“I write to formally tender my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately,” the letter stated.
“This decision did not come lightly, but after deep reflection and wide consultation, it has become clear to me that the party no longer represents the type of focused, credible, and united opposition that Nigeria so desperately needs at this critical time.”
Jamilu also expressed frustration over the PDP’s lacklustre response to national issues and its disjointed posture during the recent re-run election in his constituency.
“Among my major concerns is the increasing lack of active and coordinated opposition from the PDP, especially in moments when strong and principled voices are most needed to check the ruling party and defend the interests of the Nigerian people,” he said.
He further criticised the conduct of some party members during the re-run election in Kankara/Faskari/Sabua, describing their actions as damaging to party unity.
“More disappointing was the visible anti-party activities by some members of the PDP during the Kankara/Faskari/Sabua Federal Constituency re-run election, which further weakened our common front and exposed cracks that have remained unaddressed,” he said.
Jamilu hinted at building a new coalition, saying, “In view of this, I believe it is time to align with like minds across political divides to build a formidable coalition that will give Nigerians a real alternative one that is built on justice, progress, and unity of purpose.
“It is time to move beyond party interests and fight for the future of our dear country.
“I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served under the PDP and for the relationships built over the years.
“I look forward to working with others who share the vision of a better, more inclusive Nigeria.”
Jamilu’s resignation added to the growing wave of defections and resignations from the PDP in recent months.
Several party chieftains, lawmakers, and grassroots leaders across the country have either exited or suspended their membership over internal wrangling, unresolved leadership tussles, and what critics describe as the party’s failure to provide a credible opposition platform to the APC-led federal government.
On Wednesday, former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar announced his resignation from the party.
Earlier on Thursday, media entrepreneur Dele Momodu also resigned from the opposition party.
Atiku, Momodu and several others resigned from the PDP to join a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a better political option for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
