A Europe-based man identified as Derrick has been shot dead by gunmen in Edo State over his gold necklace reportedly worth millions of naira.

The incident occurred at the weekend along Igun Street in Benin City, where he had gone to buy spare parts for his vehicle.

Confirming the incident to newsmen on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said investigation was ongoing to arrest the perpetrators.

“I suspect the victim was trailed to Igun, because he was checking for motor spare-parts to buy when the gunmen emerged and demanded for his lumbar gold necklace.‎‎”

“But the victim asked why he should hand over the necklace.‎‎”

“His reply may have also angered the gunmen as one of them reached out for a Pump Action gun in their Lexus SUV and shot the victim twice on his leg.‎”

“The gang thereafter took off his jewellery and fled the scene.‎‎”

“Though sympathisers later rushed the victim to the hospital for medical attention, he was pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.

Witnesses said the gunmen may have trailed Derrick before suddenly accosting him and dispossessing him of his jewellery.

The deceased, who had only recently returned from a European country, was killed in daylight and stripped of his valuables before the attackers escaped.
