In a major pre-convention shake-up within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Northern stakeholders have thrown their collective support behind former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as their consensus candidate for the position of National Chairman.

The endorsement was announced after an extensive consultative meeting held in Abuja, bringing together party leaders from across Northern Nigeria. The move aims to strengthen unity and present a common front ahead of the PDP’s elective national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

A communiqué released after the meeting confirmed that the decision to back Turaki was unanimous, describing him as a bridge-builder capable of fostering stability and cohesion within the party.

“The stakeholders unanimously endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as the consensus candidate for National Chairman,” the communiqué stated, adding that the chairmanship slot had been zoned to the North-West to promote fairness and inclusivity within the PDP’s power structure.

Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a seasoned party loyalist, previously served under former President Goodluck Jonathan and also contested the PDP presidential primary in 2019. His endorsement is seen as a strategic move to reposition the party ahead of future elections.
