The development was announced in a statement issued on November 30, 2025, by Umar Gwandu Wushishi, former Zonal Chairman of SDP Niger North Zone C, following a decisive meeting involving seven Local Government Party Chairmen, zonal executives, and members of the State Executive Council.
The meeting, chaired by former Zonal Chairman Hon. Umar Gwandu Wushishi, reviewed recent developments within the party and considered the wider political interests of the zone ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Stakeholders said the discussions made clear that a major political realignment was necessary.
All seven LGA Chairmen and their executives have resigned from their positions in the SDP. Ward executives and ward-level members across the affected LGAs have also stepped down from their roles.
Stakeholders present unanimously agreed to leave the SDP and officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The LGAs affected include Agwara, Borgu, Mariga, Mashegu, Magama, Rijau and Wushishi.
A compilation of names and signatures of all members participating in the mass resignation and defection was underway at the time of filing this report. The move also involves prominent elders from Zone C, including Hon. Umar Gwandu Wushishi, Professor Rabiu Bello, Hon. Murtala Dantoro and DSP Ibrahim Ladan Tukunji.
Chairmanship and councillorship candidates who contested in the November 1, 2025 Local Government Elections have also joined the defection, signalling a significant hit on the SDP’s structure in the zone.
The stakeholders said the decision reflects a shared commitment to pursue a more unified and progressive political direction under the ADC.
Wushishi commended all party chairmen, state and zonal executives and other critical stakeholders for taking a bold and historic step towards a stronger political future within the African Democratic Congress.
