The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted the Kwara State Commissioner of Police over an alleged imminent terrorists attack on Gbabe community in the Baruten Local Government Area of the state by suspected Mamuda terrorists.
The warning was contained in a letter dated February 5, 2026, with reference number S.122/1/1897, signed by J.S. Adams for the State Director of Security, Kwara Command.
The document revealed growing security concerns over the build-up of suspected terrorists around the Kainji Lake National Park and nearby settlements, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to the safety of residents in the affected communities.
According to the DSS, intelligence reports indicate a possible attack being planned against Gbabe community in Gwanara District of Baruten Local Government Area, allegedly by armed men believed to be members of the Mamuda group.
The letter read, “Report indicates possible threat of attack by armed group, on Gbabe Community, Gwanara District, Baruten Local Government Area (LGA), Kwara State. This stemned from the build up of armed men suspected to be Mamuda element around Kiyoru Settlement, even as the villagers has expressed hostility display of the elements.”
The DSS further warned that the activities and movement of armed groups within and around the Kainji Lake National Park have raised serious security concerns, stressing the need for urgent preventive measures.
“In view of the antecedents of armed groups around Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP), there is need to emplace necessary security measures, to forestall any untoward development,” the letter stated.
The security agency urged the police command in the state to take immediate and proactive steps to avert any potential attack on the community and surrounding areas.
“Respectfully forwarded for your attention and necessary action, please,” the DSS concluded in the correspondence addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command.
The park, which stretches across parts of Kwara and Niger states, has in recent years been identified by Nigerian government as a potential hideout for bandits and terrorist groups operating within the North Central and North West regions.
On February 4, 2026, SaharaReporters reported that dozens of people have been brutally massacred following a coordinated and deadly attack by suspected Sahel-backed terrorists on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Among those killed in the bloody onslaught are two wives of the Emir of Woro, several of his children, the Chief Imam of Woro, a school principal, a headmistress, and students who had just returned home from school.
The Emir himself, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, is currently missing, sparking fears that he may have been abducted or killed by the attackers.
It was gathered that the terrorists are allegedly linked to a Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction with suspected operational ties to terrorist networks operating across the Sahel region.
The attackers reportedly invaded Woro on Tuesday evening, unleashing unprecedented violence on residents and passersby.
The terrorists killed indiscriminately, slaughtering men, women, and children.
“They were killing anyone they met,” a source said, adding that travellers passing through Woro to other destinations were also murdered during the rampage.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed that dozens of people were killed during the attack, including members of the Emir’s immediate family.
Two of the Emir’s wives and some of his children were reportedly among those killed when the attackers overran the community.
The Chief Imam of Woro, regarded as a key religious figure in the area, was also killed, alongside a school principal and a headmistress. Several students who had just returned from school were not spared.
The attackers also reportedly slit the throats of some victims, particularly farmers and traders who had travelled from Ilorin to Woro for agricultural and commercial activities. These individuals were caught unawares as the militants swept through the area.
The Emir of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, remains missing as of the time of filing this report.
However, his official vehicle was seized by the assailants and allegedly used to transport some abducted victims to unknown destinations.
His palace was also set ablaze during the attack.
In a disturbing video, voices could be heard in the background lamenting that the Emir’s palace had been burned down.
Several lifeless bodies were seen lying on the ground, while some buildings in the community have been burnt.
A voice in the video confirmed that the Emir was missing and that his wives and children had been killed, as flames engulfed sections of the palace.
