A night meant for celebration ended in tragedy after a 30-year-old Nigerian immigrant and aspiring fashion designer, Sheriff Shittu, was shot in the head inside Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.
The incident happened around 4:25 a.m. on Saturday when a gunman opened fire inside the nightclub. Sheriff had gone out with his younger brother, Fawaz Shittu, to celebrate a friend’s birthday, just a day before their mother was scheduled to arrive from Nigeria for a visit.
According to Fawaz, trouble started when a drunk patron began groping women, including Sheriff’s girlfriend. A brief tussle followed. Although the brothers initially left the club, they returned minutes later after realizing Sheriff had forgotten his phone.
As the intoxicated man was being escorted out, the club owner reportedly tried to calm the situation. Moments later, a gunshot rang out.
“I heard ‘pow,’ and I looked down and I saw my brother,” Fawaz recalled. “I was screaming his name. I was trying to wake him up.”
A bartender attempted CPR before medics rushed Sheriff to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
The grieving family has questioned how the gunman managed to enter the club with a weapon, alleging security lapses.
Sheriff, who immigrated to the U.S. in 2018, worked as a security guard while building his fashion brand, Riff Ent. His family described him as kind, protective, and deeply devoted to his loved ones.
Heartbreakingly, their mother, Foluke Shittu, learned of her son’s d+ath only after landing in New York for her planned visit.
Despite the devastating loss, the family says they will continue pushing Sheriff’s fashion dream forward, while demanding justice for his killing.
